Caffeinated Detroit!

thedetroitfoodie:

It seems like there’s a new coffeehouse opening every other week here in the city, which (don’t get me wrong) is pretty awesome! There was even a recent article on how Detroit is becoming the next Seattle with the high number of coffee shops opening all around the city and its surrounding metro area. Read the article here.

In the meantime, here’s a listing of some of my favorite coffeehouses in Detroit!

Astro Coffee : : My pick for THE BEST coffee in the D! Yes you’ll wait a while for your slow drip coffee (this isn’t McD’s afterall) but it’s def worth the wait…not only is your latte or cappuccino beautifully presented with a floral/leaf-like pattern, but it tastes DIVINE!
Side note: there’s no wi-fi.

Cafe con Leche : : Check out this posting i did a while back. If you haven’t been to Cafe con Leche yet, def make it a priority on your to-do list…you won’t be disappointed! : )

14 East : : What a hidden surprise! 14 East is quickly becoming my fav spot to grab a cup of joe, nosh on some tasty in-house made pastries, all the while i work on a couple design projects. The coffee is superb, the space has a modern open setting, and they even have a little section where they sell locally made Michigan & Detroit themed goods.

Chez Zara : : A French inspired cafe in the heart of downtown! They serve traditional (great tasting) Illy™ coffee as well as some unique flavored lattes like chocolate/orange, Nutella™, and other tasty drinks. Quick side note: Chez Zara is only open M-F (7am-5pm).

1515 Broadway : : So happy that they were able to renew their lease and stay, yay! This often overlooked cafe/bistro/theatre is a great place to grab a cup of coffee on the way to work, get a lox for lunch, and catch a show (either a play or concert) in the evening! : )

Courage Coffee : : The newest player to enter the java scene is located in the heart of Hamtown, across from the post office.  Walking in you’re immediately taken aback at the NYC-esque modern vibe here….am i really in Hamtramck right now?!?! Yep! Besides the chill atmosphere, the workers here are friendly and the coffee is superb! They use fair trade coffees from Kenya, Guatemala, and a few other locales.

Thistle House Coffee : : Let me preface this short review by saying the main draw is def not the coffee (which is so-so)…but the cozy couches, abundance of good free wi-fi, and great open space makes this THE IDEAL place for studying or group meetings!

Cafe 1923 : : Hamtramck’s (not so) hidden gem. After years of restoration, the couple that opened Cafe 1923 brought in a much needed caffeine boost for the community. The coffee is great, they sell sandwiches and such, there’s free wi-fi, and the overall space is fantastic! There’s basically two rooms: the coffee bar area and the library (which is stacked with -you guessed it- books and a few board games)….Scrabble™ anyone?
Fyi: CASH ONLY

Motorcity Java House : : Located in the Artist Village (a def must see), this quaint coffehouse on Detroit’s Westside serves up coffee in an warm ‘Welcome to the neighborhood’ type setting. In addition to a great cup o’joe, they also sell baked goods from their neighbors at Sweet Potato Sensations! On Saturday evenings the coffeehouse also features live poetry readings starting at 9pm.
